balancing work + passion

In the picturesque region of Barossa, South Australia, Claire Hannagan leads a unique and fulfilling life. Balancing her role as an architectural building designer for SJM Builders with her passion for Vanguardist Wines, Claire exemplifies the art of juggling two diverse worlds. In this blog, we delve into Claire's story and explore the inspiration behind her dual career, the challenges she faces, and the factors that set her businesses apart from others in the industry.

finding passion in diversity //

Claire's journey began with a career change eight years ago when she transitioned from being an event/project manager to pursuing her passion for building design. After completing the necessary training and joining SJM Builders, Claire loved the diverse challenges presented by her new role. From conceptualising unique architectural designs to transforming defunct spaces into vibrant living areas, each project allows her to exercise her creativity and problem-solving skills. Claire loves to find solutions for her clients.

Simultaneously, Claire found herself drawn to the captivating world of winemaking through Vanguardist Wines, with her winemaker husband Michael at the helm. As a boutique, family winery located in Seppeltsfield, Vanguardist Wines prides itself on sourcing fruit from renowned regions such as Barossa, McLaren Vale, and Riverland, and producing small-batch, minimal intervention wines. Claire's involvement with Vanguardist spans various areas, from tending to the vineyard during pruning season to hosting guests at the winery; sharing the intricacies of winemaking, and refining elements such as label and website design.

embracing challenges //

Wearing multiple hats and juggling conflicting demands - not to mention the addition of two little ones into the mix - can be hectic and constant. However, her unwavering passion and commitment to both endeavors drive her forward. Claire believes that her dedication, attention to detail, and authenticity in storytelling set Vanguardist Wines apart from others in the industry. The relentless pursuit of perfection and the willingness to go the extra mile contribute to the distinct character of their wines.

motivation during challenging times //

Maintaining motivation and passion during challenging times can be demanding for anyone. When asked about her secret, Claire's response is refreshing in its honesty. She accepts that the never-ending to-do list is simply not humanly possible to complete and that achieving the perfect work-life balance is equally elusive. Yet, the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles, making things happen, and  Claire's ability to embrace the imperfections highlights her resilience and determination.

Vanguardist is our life and features in every single part/minute/day. As any business owner would relate, it isn’t a 9-5 role. Luckily a lot of my best work is done after the kids are in bed!

the power of a supportive community //

While Claire enjoys working independently, she acknowledges the significance of the social aspect of her workspace. Moving to the Barossa with limited connections, Workspace Barossa provides her with a vibrant environment to work alongside like-minded individuals. Although she may be reserved when initiating social interactions, the shared space creates a positive and motivating atmosphere. The workspace's convenient location, just around the corner from her home and winery, allows Claire to wave at the kids as they ride home from school, reinforcing the unique advantages of living and working in a close-knit community.

the flexibility factor //

Having the flexibility to work in a coworking space has been instrumental in helping Claire strike a better work-life balance. Initially working from home, Claire realised the challenges of multitasking and prioritising work effectively.

Luckily my building design work allows for me to be flexible when it comes to office location. The main office is located in Clare, but we service projects (anywhere from Flinders Ranges through to Adelaide). Apart from meeting clients, and site inspections, I am lucky that I can be positioned anywhere in front of my laptop.

However, with this amount of flexibility, Claire found this can be challenging to stay on task or connect with others. The workspace provides a better structure to her day and setup.By embracing the coworking space, she gains the structure and focus needed to separate work and personal life. It provides Claire with the opportunity to start each day by "going to work," fostering a sense of routine and productivity.

Claire will be sharing some of their Vanguardist Wines at our next Meet Your Neighbours catch up - so come along and say hi!
